Backstory
Omen is essentially an orphan. His mother died in childbirth, and his father abandoned him to an orphanage shortly after. Omen, was not his given name. When the orphanage took him in he was given the name Eramor. He was treated fairly well by the caretakers and other children as a child because, for some reason, the traits of his infernal heritage hadn’t presented other than his reddish brown skin, black hair, and black eyes. It was just assumed that he was descended from people of exotic origins. This all changed with the onset of adolescence.
Unbeknownst to him his mother had visited a wizard while she was pregnant. Not wanting her child to experience the same prejudices and bigotry she had, she sought a spell that would hide the traits of his heritage. Unfortunately the infernal magic coursing through his body was much stronger than that of the spell placed upon him in his mother’s womb. When Eramor reached the age of about 13 he experienced changes other than that of normal human children. Horns began to sprout from the sides of his head, just behind his temples. Also, a tail began to grow, and his canine teeth became noticeably longer and more pointed. By the time he was 14 he had a full set of thick horns that sprouted forward then curved up and behind his head ending in points. His tail also grew thick and long. As it became readily apparent what he was attitudes around him changed. His experiences at the orphanage changed dramatically. The caretakers were too good and nice to abuse him. They did however begin to keep their distance and avoid speaking or making contact with him whenever possible. The children his age were decidedly less kind. He was called many terrible names and often physically assaulted. He rarely offered any defense as he was almost as ashamed of his obvious heritage as he was hated by others. The only light for him in this time of darkness was his friend Yllarona.
A half-elf girl of roughly his age, Yllarona had been shunned and abandoned by her elvish father and his people. Her mother had tried to raise her, but was murdered by a thug late at night while walking home from work. Eramor and Yllarona bonded over the similarities in their situation. They became very close, and by 16 years old Eramor was madly in love with Yllarona. He never expressed his true feelings though for fear of ruining their friendship. Whenever things got too bad for him to handle she was there to help him through it, and remind him that someone in this cruel world cared for him. Unfortunately that was not to last. All of a sudden Yllarona took very ill. She had to be kept in bed and isolated. Eramor was unable to visit at all. She was like this for weeks. Eramor was very distraught, but worse he didn’t have her to lean on when things got bad for him. The other boys were relentless on him. Day in, and day out he dealt with physical and emotional abuse. The caretakers never seemed to notice what was going on, and he was too proud to report it. Each night Eramor would cry himself to sleep, but little by little a quiet rage began to build in him as well, the product of his heritage and the abuse.
One day as he was wandering the streets a group of boys chased him into an alley planning to give him one of the beatings he was so used to. However, as they were about to start pummeling him a shadow fell over them and the boys were hurled away. They all quickly got to their feet and looked around to see what had happened. As they looked up to the top of the two story building behind Eramor their eyes went wide and they fled. Stunned, Eramor looked up. Atop the building was a handsome Tiefling man. He nimbly scaled his way down the side of the building. Eramor was frightened but tried not to show it. He asked the man if what he did was magic. The stranger said it was, and that he thought the boy needed some assistance. He knew something of the problems that could come with a Tiefling heritage. Eramor thanked him profusely and asked if he could be taught some of what the man used. The strangers said perhaps, but it would have to wait. If he was still interested Eramor was to meet him there at the same time tomorrow. Eramor readily agreed. Little did he know though, that this stranger was no good samaritan. He was the astral projection of the demon lord Eldanoth.
Over the next several days Eramor and the stranger met. Eramor was given some basic instruction on how to protect himself, but never any instruction in magic. He began to get frustrated because what he really wanted was power. Power to protect himself, and power to take vengeance on those who were tormenting him. Eldanoth could, of course, see these desires. He wanted them to grow stronger. After a couple of weeks Eramor pleaded to be shown some of the magic the stranger had used. Sensing that it was time to set the hook, as it were, Eldanoth told Eramor he couldn’t simply show it. He would have to bestow the power upon him, but it would be at a cost. With adolescence clouding his judgement Eramor said he would agree to anything. The stranger said Eramor would simply need to make a blood pact that he would be of service to the stranger and join his brotherhood for life. Eramor didn’t see anything wrong with this. He figured he would just get to spend more time with people who would treat him properly, and he would continue to learn and gain power from his new mentor. Smiling the stranger took a blade from his belt. He pierced both of their palms and grasped Eramor’s hand in his. As their blood mingled Eramor could feel the power enter his body. He knew he would be able to protect himself and those he loved now. The stranger said Eramor should take a few days to acclimate himself and to ponder their agreement. Then, he would meet him back at the alley.
During this time, Yllarona began to slowly improve. She was conscious and was now allowed visitors. Eramor came to her, excited, after the last meeting with the stranger. He told her of his new power, and how he wouldn’t have to be bullied any longer. Yllarona was suspicious of this agreement, but she didn’t say anything to Eramor. He was happier than she had seen him in ages, and she didn’t want to spoil it. She was going to be getting out in a couple of days, and she could talk more with him then.
The story of what happened to the bullies in the alley had spread, and for the most part Eramor had been left alone. However, two days after his pact with the stranger Eramor was cornered in the courtyard of the orphanage by several boys. They harassed him, and picked on him for not having his protector with him. Two boys held him while another two took turns beating him. This time though, the rage within Eramor melded with the new power he had. It began to wash over him, and he lost all control of himself. Without even knowing what he was doing he fired beams of crackling energy out of his hands that were being restrained. Both boys holding him were thrown back and away from him. The other two didn’t see what exactly happened and just came at him. At the same time several other boys rushed to join as well. Eramor ran on pure anger and instinct throwing beam after beam at everyone he saw. Eventually all the boys attacking him laid scattered around the yard either unconscious or groaning in pain. Eramor was seething with anger until he looked up and saw the form Yllarona, still in her gown (she must have come straight from the infirmary to let him know she was out), lying very still in the distance.
He ran to her as quickly as he could. Kneeling at her side he checked for any sign of life. Her body was very still, and she wasn’t breathing. Here eyes were open in a look of surprise. While all the other children were simply unconscious, her still weakened body had not been able to withstand the shock of pure energy she had sustained. Eramor had killed his only friend in the world. He cried as he held her limp form. He sat there crying until he heard a loud gasp then scream. One of the caretakers had come outside to the scene. Now, riddled with fear, Eramor let go of Yllarona and fled as fast as he could. He knew he would be executed if he was caught so he pulled the hood of his cloak up and ran into the crowded city.
A day later he met the stranger back in the alley where this began. He explained what had happened. He was terrified and explained that he never wanted to hurt anyone badly. He regretted it, and didn’t think he could control the power. He wanted the stranger to take it back. The man stared back… and laughed. The man said, “Boy, you do not know who I am. I am Eldanoth! Master of the Arch of Eternity! A Demon Lord of the Abyss! You have entered into a blood pact with me. You shall serve me for the rest of your life, and for eternity after that. I have granted you the power of my home, no trivial thing. Be thankful I let you live after the insult you just offered me in trying to return my gift.”
More angry than scared now because of the power flowing through him, Eramor countered with, “No one owns me! I am my own!”
“Are you certain of that boy?” Eldanoth asked.
With that Eramor turned to leave. However, his body froze. He was unable to move at all.
“I may not be able to make you use the power I have granted, but make no mistake. You are mine. You live because I allow it. You will serve me when I require it, and should I have need of your death I will take it!”
Then, abruptly, Eldanoth was gone and Eramor’s body was once more under his control. He swore then, to never use the power he was given again, but that was much more difficult than he expected. Eramor, in an effort to avoid incarceration, fell in with a thieves guild shortly after. This kept him to the shadows, and this is where he learned to be a smuggler, which is what he is to this day. He has tried to distance himself from his power, but he has not been able to fully abandon it. In his world it is too useful. Even though he regrets each use, he has grown in his ability as well. What’s worse is the more he uses it the more his mind bends toward the realm from which it comes. He struggles hard to keep his morality, and he is always in search of someone or something that can help him to break his pact with Eldanoth and rid him of the curse that are his powers.
After fleeing he was also in need of a new name. He opted to take the route many young Tieflings did and take a name that embodied a concept or virtue that represented their life. No matter how careful he was, because of his heritage and power, anywhere Eramor went he had a profound affect on those around him. Not always bad, and the people were not necessarily aware of it, but there was always an impact. Because of this, he took the name Omen.
