Ryn riding Âta into battle

An account of the final day of Ryn, son of Kyðeon, as told by Âta:

"Long ago, before there were Scions in the land of Sarapadia, there was a tribe of elves loyal to the metallic dragons of Sarapadia. They formed and alliance of sorts, where the dragons would allow themselves to be ridden into battle, as the Enemy was not so powerful in Sarapadia, and the land could be warded thusly by these apex predators. A young elven dragon knight named Ryn was chosen as a new rider by a budding young adult bronze dragon named Âta. I could see in Ryn his righteousness, his glory, his strength, and his infinite kindness and patience, much like his father, Kyðeon. I was proud, and confident, and so sure of myself. Kyðeon was already much wiser than I, even though we differed little in age. I convinced Kyðeon that I knew what I was doing with his son, and assured him he was my best choice of rider, to which he could not disagree.

One day, I carried Ryn into battle against Urshek, the Living Volcano, who was twice my size. He had no rider and was too proud to ally with others, so I knew that Ryn's protections would ward him against Urshek's breath, so we could take multiple lancing runs and quickly hobble a superior foe before he could land a lethal attack. I was not prepared for the heat or intensity of his blast, his name being rightly earned, but it was the mind trick Urshek played on Ryn that succeeded in causing him to fear Urshek, so the fiery blast which sent Ryn tumbling from my back also deadened my scales to the sensation of my rider's presence, and I never heard Ryn's screams as he fell to his death a thousand feet below. I picked up his body after fiercely attacking Urshek, but realized my loss too late. I harried Urshek until he turned and fled, and then flew to where I knew his body would be, and picked up my rider, Ryn. I carried his lifeless body back to his father, and beseeched his forgiveness, but Kyðeon had no words since he had no power over me, and he knew the risks as did Ryn. All that remains of that day now are Kyðeon, me, and that cuirass you now wear, Laima, which Ryn wore his last day on Midgard.

I have not taken the form of a dragon since that day. I have placed myself in exile here, to await judgement for my actions, and if he will reincarnate my soul, or feed it to Tiamat."
